Of course the valses, especially the duos with Carlos Dante & Julio Martel are popular worldwide and in the U.S. as well, but his vocal tangos get little play, whereas his late instrumentals (especially “Pavadita”) have been overplayed to the point of cliché.
Among porteños, however, there seems to be more of a taste for him. Personally, I really only like four of his tangos: this one, “Como se muere de amor,” “Gloria,” and “La vida me engañó.”

actually, I’m a bit puzzled. According to your remarks, there seems to be a general dislike of Tangos from De Angelis.
Up to now I always thought, that my taste of Tango-music was quite normal, but I have to admit, that I love dancing to at least two dozens of De Angelis Tangos.
Is there anything wrong with me? If so, is there a cure?

Posted by Norman | 11.10.2010, 12:35 PMI would prescribe an immediate dose of D’Arienzo, followed by a Pugliese chaser, with long term Di Sarli treatments. Avoid Fresedo and Demare until you have been cured ;).
But in all seriousness…
Tango tastes vary by person, but also by region. For example, I found when living in the Bay Area that there are a certain group of songs played by most of the DJs there, that the people there love. Other things, like De Angelis tangos, are seldom heard there, or at any festivals in the U.S. I’ve attended in the last several years. However, they are popular in Buenos Aires. I can’t speak for Europe as I’ve never tangoed there…but if people in your community play and love De Angelis, that’s hardly “wrong” or abnormal.

Maybe don’t know the tango, if so, try it and telme if you liked. If not, tell me what don’t you liked. I think these two tangos are the most dramatic and a bit hard to understand and even more dificult to translate. Hope you posted in the future to all to enjoy!. Thanks for you work.
