Lejos de Buenos Aires (1942)

Far from Buenos Aires
lyrics by Oscar Rubens
music by Alberto Suárez Villanueva

With a sorrowful grimace,
old, sad, and worthless,
walking with a slow step
I’m carrying my grief.
Far from the big city
that has seen me flourish,
in the strangest streets
I feel my soul start to darken.
No one sees my end,
nor do they care about my grief,
no one wants my friendship,
I’m alone with my bitterness.
And so I’ve wandered
since the day I arrived
after I abandoned everything
to chase a crazy dream.

And wandering aimlessly suddenly I was startled,
when I head a recording of that tango:
“Waiter, bring another drink,”*
sung by Carlos Gardel.
And hearing it I remembered everything from the past,
the happy years of my youth,
my old lady, my gang of friends,
that girl who I abandoned.
Tango, you brings such memories!
My Buenos Aires, I want to weep!

Orquesta Miguel Caló, singer Raúl Berón

Orquesta Aníbal Troilo, singer Francisco Fiorentino

*“La copa del olvido” is the tango referred to here.

“Mozo traiga otra copa,”
que lo cantaba Carlos Gardel.
Y al escucharlo recordé todo el pasado,

los años mozos tan felices que pasé:
mi viejecita, la barra amiga,
la noviecita que abandoné.
Tango, ¡que trae recuerdos!
Mi Buenos Aires, ¡quiero llorar!

How nice that you followed this tango with the one of Vacarezza, showing how Rubens used his lyrics and made reference to Gardel.
