Adiós, Buenos Aires

Goodbye, Buenos Aires
lyrics by Leopoldo Torres Ríos

I must depart from this much belovèd land,
I must depart, though my heart begins to bleed.
Like a poet, I must say before I leave:
goodbye Buenos Aires, my dear friends, goodbye.

Porteña nights that knew all my greatest joys
today stand as mute witnesses to my pain,
every corner stirs another memory in me—
and all of it speaks to me of love.

I don’t know what paths my steps will take
as destiny leads me far from this land.
in my soul I carry many losses and many pains
that I hope to forget down some road.

And if among the thick mists of London
or in the hellish din of New York City
this hidden pain suddenly comes back to life—
goodbye Buenos Aires, my dear friends, goodbye.
