Una vez (1943)

One Time
lyrics by Lito Bayardo (Manuel Juan García Ferrari)
music by Carlos Marcucci

The sun’s rays were dying,
the mist of a day without light,
and then, in the evening calm,
my anguish and my pain both fled.

I dreamt that evening of your kisses,
I felt so happy when you returned,
and when I laid eyes on you again
my dreams began to sing:

“One time, I saw you just one time…
and I fell in love with you—one time was enough.
Now I don’t know if I’ll be away from your caresses—
Poor me! I feel so alone without you.”

Only you understand me…
always you, so I can triumph…
never again, I swear to you, my darling,
never again can I live without you.

Orquesta Típica Victor (dir. Mario Maurano), singer Ortega del Cerro

Note: There is another completely different tango called “Una vez,” with music by Osvaldo Pugliese and lyrics by Cátulo Castillo, recorded by Pugliese’s orchestra with singer Alberto Morán in 1946. That lyric will be featured in a future post.

(Spanish original after the jump)

Una vez

Morían los rayos del sol,
la niebla de un día sin luz,
y luego en la tarde serena
huyeron mi angustia y mi pena.

Soñaba aquella tarde con tus besos,
sentíame feliz con tu regreso,
y al verte de nuevo ante mí
cantaban mis sueños así:

“Una vez, solo te vi una vez…
y te amé—solo bastó una vez.
Hoy no sé si me faltará tu cariño—
¡ay de mí! Estoy solo sin ti.”

Solo tú me sabes comprender…

  1. A bit too sweet but what a great music!

    • Yes, the lyric is not the most sophisticated—but it appeals to the pining adolescent in me.🙂.

      • Derrick, I’ve been corrected on the opening line – many transcribe it as
Moría en los rayos de sol
and it sort of makes sense – that sunlight did not die, but the mists of darkness died in its rays, and the evening weather turned nice, and likewise the darkness of his soul dissipated in the warmth of her kiss? So I shoud stand corrected, is that right?
