Garúa (1943)

What a night–filled with chills and fatigue!
The wind carries a strange lament,
the night is like a deep well of shadows,
and among the shadows I walk, so slowly…
while all the while the drizzle
underlines it all
putting its spines
through my heart…

On this night, so cold and so mine
I amaze myself, always dwelling on the same thing…
and although I want to tear her out,
throw her out,
and forget her,
I just remember her more.

Sad and alone, down the sidewalk
goes my heart, stricken
with the sadness of a condemned building,
feeling your frostiness
because that girl, when she forgot me,
tore open a hole where the rain gets in.
Like a specter in the shadows
that searches for her still and calls out her name…
even the sky has started to cry!

mientras tanto la garúa
se acentúa
con sus púas
en mi corazón…

En esta noche tan fría y tan mía
pensando siempre en lo mismo me abismo
y aunque quiera arrancarla,
y olvidarla,
la recuerdo más.

Solo y triste por la acera
va este corazón transido
con tristeza de tapera
sintiendo tu hielo
porque aquella, con su olvido,
hoy le ha abierto una gotera.
Como un duende que en la sombra
más la busca y más la nombra…
Garúa… tristeza…
¡Hasta el cielo se ha puesto a llorar!

    • Hi Dmitry,
      I must confess, my decision as to whether or not to publish the “complete” lyrics (because of course the famous “dance versions” usually only include one verse and one chorus) rests largely on how much time I have that day/how much work I feel like doing :).

Yes, Derrick, I usually do the same when the last verse isn’t sung in the recording of the tango … but I often wonder if the contemporary tangueros knew the whole text, and how it may have affected their feelings. Like when translating Cuando estabo enamorado, I noted that the last line in the recording wasn’t rhymed, and of course the letras have a different, a whole lot more irreverent line there, about “the next girl who would surely be better” (which the listeners might have noticed, to their understanding laughs) – and if they knew the skipped verse, it would give them a stronger burst of laughter ’cause it went about the poor depressed soul already knowing deep inside that the end of this love conundrum was coming.
