Con los amigos (A mi madre)

With Those Friends (To My Mother)
lyrics by Sebastián Alfredo Robles

With those friends that my wealth bought,
I eagerly fritted away all my time—
and under my wallet’s powerful influence,
everyone reveled in splendid luxury…
but my mother didn’t.

Poor mother! I had forgotten all about her
whilst I slept in the arms of vice.
An immense court surrounded me
and all of them felt my affections—
but my mother didn’t.

Today, as I’m dying and collapsing into tears
I cry out with pain, “Everything’s gone!”
and when they see my anguished chest wheeze,
everyone runs away from my pathetic bedside,
but my mother doesn’t!

And now, as my last breath approaches,
everyone runs away, because of my sickness—
as I gaze all around my bed
by my sad side I can’t see anyone
but my mother—she’s here!

Today, as I’m dying and collapsing into tears
I cry out with pain, “Everything’s gone!”
and when they see my anguished chest wheeze,
everyone runs away from my pathetic bedside,
but my mother doesn’t!

¡Pobre madre!

  1. Thank you. I will dance this vals with very different emotion next time.
